Jack Goodrich, Pavara Ranatundra, Peggy AmatangeloThe McCandless Democratic Committee presented a $1,000.00 scholarship to Pavara Ranatunga at a special celebratory meeting, Tuesday June 5th, 2012 at the McCandless Town Hall.

Pavara Ranatunga a North Allegheny Senior is headed to the Penn State Honors Program and plans to study Aeronautical Engineering. Pavara came to this country a little over eight years ago; his family immigrated to the United States from the small island of Sri Lanka, after his father won the Green Card Lottery. Unable to speak English, they made steady progress and today the family has gained their United States Citizenship. In the interview Pavara credited Debora Sundo a teacher from Hosack Elementary as being the most influential person in his life when he immigrated. Mrs. Sundo attended the award presentation.

This is the 7th annual McCandless Democratic Committee Scholarship. The committee awards a scholarship each year to a North Allegheny senior who exemplifies the values of hard work and civic duty. Applicants are judged on their grades and test scores, and an essay on one issue from the platform of the Democratic Party. The Committee emphasizes the studentsí commitment to and participation in service and civic life
