Scholarship

The McCandless Democratic Committee presented a $1,000.00 scholarship to Laura Malecky at a special celebratory meeting, Tuesday June 3rd, 2008 at the McCandless Town Hall.

Miss Malecky is a graduating senior at North Allegheny High School. She is the daughter of Suzanne and Lawrence Malecky of McCandless. Besides being an outstanding student, Ms. Malecky participated in a wide variety of activities in her high school career, including Junior ROTC, Key Club, Student Council, Z-Club International Service Club, the National Junior Honor Society and the National Honor Society. As a community volunteer, she participated in the Girl Scouts and was a Girl Scout Assistant Leader. Malecky also volunteered at JROTC Summer Leadership School, PASC (Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils) conferences, and Girl Scout resident camp.

Miss Malecky will be attending New York University in New York City this fall. She plans to design her own major specializing in Community Development and Youth Empowerment.

The McCandless Democratic Committee awards a scholarship each year to a North Allegheny senior who exemplifies the values of hard work and civic duty. Applicants are judged on their grades and test scores, and an essay on one issue from the platform of the Democratic Party. The Committee emphasizes the students’ commitment to and participation in service and civic life
